Abstract: Spatial thinking is a basic thinking model for cognitive learning and research in geographical science. To meet the needs of cultivating high-quality talents majoring in GIScience in the context of new media, we designed targeted teaching contents for training spatial literacy of students from four aspects of experiencing simulated geographic space, mapping and interpreting spatial information, abstracting metaphor information by semantic cognition, and analyzing geographical system comprehensively. Application directions of spatial thinking for deep processing and utilizing new media information were also expounded, which include information perception and classification, hidden information mining, visualization of information expression, industry services supporting, and decision making for spatial governance. It would help undergraduate students to make full use of the learning tools of new media and systematize specialist knowledge system for higher-level spatial literacy. This study is a beneficial exploration for undergraduate teaching of geographic information science.

Key words: new media, geographic information science, geographical spatial thinking, teaching research
