Automatic Extraction of Lunar Craters Based on Neighborhood Analysis of Linear Window Using DEM

Abstract: Craters of the moon is the most intuitive,typical geological units,so the extraction and analysis of lunar craters is of great significance to reveal the geological evolution process.This study designs neighborhood analysis of linear window for automatic extraction of lunar craters by using the 100 meters resolution DEM data derived from the Lunar reconnaissance orbiter (LRO) of America.The results of experiment by two different areas in lunar mare and lunar land show that the best extraction window of lunar mare is 1×7 and 7×1,the best extraction threshold is 4.5. The best extraction window of lunar land is 1×9 and 9×1,the best extraction threshold is 6.This method can reach 78% on the extraction rate of the craters compared to results of visual recognition.The results of evaluation factors show that the extraction accuracy of this method is more than 77%,and the extraction quality is above 70%.
