Abstract: This study proposes a multi-scale maximum morphological profiles building index for automatic building extraction from high-resolution remotely sensed imagery. The index can solve the following problems:the existing building detecting methods cannot well satisfy the characteristic of high resolution image; it is difficult to distinguish due to the similar characteristics between buildings, roads and bare soil, and so on.The index can well character the building. The index application in the building change detection was taken as an example and experiments were conducted on ZY-3 satellite images. This method achieved satisfactory results.

Key words: multi-scale, maximum morphological profiles, building index, change detection
