Abstract: Using night light data as data source, this paper extracts the construction area of Harbin in 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017, calculates the expansion speed, roundness, compactness and fractal dimension, and analyzes the driving force of urban expansion. The results show that from 1992 to 2017, the morphological characteristics of the built-up areas in Harbin changed greatly and the compactness decreased. The driving forces of urban expansion mainly come from economic development, population growth and policy planning.
